LA Sky Perspectives

I went exploring in Los Angeles last weekend to shoot a project for my photography class. Here are two of the images I loved.

I love the light and symmetry in this one; it ended up being a commentary on Los Angeles industrialism. Whenever I shot the sky or its reflection in a puddle, there was a powerline in the image. So I did what I do best and made it into art!

Fun fact: this next image is completely the reflection in the puddle!

Young Guru @ USC

Hello lovely readers!

As some of you may know, I photograph for the Thornton Popular Music Program. Every Friday an industry professional comes to speak to the Popular Music students. Last Friday, I had the pleasure of photographing Young Guru speak to the students.

There are certain guests that I can't help but feel inspired from-- and Young Guru was one of them. Wise beyond his years, Young Guru related his story of growing up, building his own engineering equipment, and working hard to make his dreams come true. He spoke candidly about his experiences in the business and with other people. Some of his wisdom:

It's not a conceited thing; my mother raised me to believe that I can do anything I set my mind to. I don't care how long it takes-- if I decide I want to do something I will work to learn until I know how to do it. I could spend four years studying how to build a rocket, but I would eventually build one.

"The worst thing to do is become popular or famous without being the real you-- because then you just have to keep up the lie"

"It's all about the emotion once you get the technique; the emotion you evoke in your audience"

"Life already started. Don't wait until you get out of college to do what you want to do- do it now."

Young Guru was so humble, exuding such wisdom, bowing as the audience erupted in applause at the end.

Staying humble, Young exclaimed "I have to get a picture with Patrice Rushen!!" or else his mom would be angry with him. Such an honor to be in the presence of both Young and Patrice!

This one's my favorite-- such candid joy! :)

I love my job.

Through a Different Lens...

On my Monday off, I was strolling through campus when I came upon a fountain with odd bubbles. "A soapy fountain" I thought to myself as I walked over to look at it. These pictures resulted. I call it "iPhone-tography"!

As I continued on, I was inspired to photograph campus. Having only my wallet and phone with me, I was constrained to my iPhone. Instead of going back to get my camera, I decided to challenge myself. I have all this fancy camera equipment back at home, but photography isn't about the equipment. It's about the eye-- seeing the world in a different way. Here's just a few of the many pictures I composed that morning. These are all unedited images. Enjoy!

How cool is this next one? It's like a laser beam of sunlight!

Beautiful streams of light outside Doheney Library.

Pensive Reflection outside VKC.

Some photography is all about the emotion the image evokes, as it is in the image above.
Here's some fun geometry from my dorm last year, Birnkrant.

And finally, who says iPhone cameras aren't of quality? Here's a shallow depth of field close up shot, from a worm's eye view! I love this one.

I hope everyone has a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!

Autumn Compositions

Yes, Autumn does exist in Los Angeles... you just have to get out of the city to see it! These are the first shots I've taken for me in a long time- I've been so blessed keeping busy with client shoots, which is amazing, but it's great to remember why I started photography in the first place :)

It was so fun to play with shapes, composition, and elements/ principles of design! It was like I was back in high school AP photo class.

Enjoy!
